2017 Digest: Superb first year with Pies off a non-existent pre-season. Flown through summer this time, so look out!
2017 NAB Cup:
2017 Season
1 | WB | Such a weapon zooming through the centre square and eyeing off the goals. Three quarters off the top shelf. | 7 |
2 | Rich | Proving well worth the two first-round picks the Pies sacrificed (and he’s all paid up now); 35 disposals and two fine goals. | 8 |
3 | Syd | Superb third-quarter goal and got his hands dirty with a remarkable 14 tackles. Exemplified the Pies’ blue-collar approach. | 7 |
4 | StK | Broke clear at times and wound up with the footy 29 times, but couldn't quite hit the mark going forward. | 6 |
5 | Ess | Six tackles in first term set a standard, and 11 for the game added to 39 touches. Could not have done more. | 8 |
6 | Geel | Five inside-50s, 26 disposals, five tackles and gut running kept the engine room ticking over. Solid effort. | 7 |
7 | Carl | Couldn't finish off his work with effective disposals. Often blazed away kicking the maximum distance and turned it over. | 5 |
8 | Groin. | ||
9 | Haw | Another slow start (three-disposal first quarter) but got up and zooming as the game wore on. | 7 |
10 | Bris | Despite fact he had 30 others were more damaging but still grabbed seven clearances and seven inside-50s. | 8 |
11 | Frem | Fantastic with 25 possessions, one goal and five score assists. A bull. | 8 |
12 | Melb | Busy as a three-in-a-bed. Roosted home a lovely long goal in third term and never stopped trying to lift his team; seven inside-50s. | 8 |
13 | Bye. | ||
14 | Port | Frontline midfielder was busy with 35 possessions. Effort was strong but not hugely damaging forward of centre. | 7 |
15 | Haw | Workrate strong as usual and won his share of the pill. If only he had a tad more polish and penetration in his kicking. | 6 |
16 | Ess | Kicking was horrible. Can’t be considered elite given his lack of penetration and precision; 21 possessions. | 5 |
17 | GCS | Ran hard for all four quarters, and was useful around the stoppages. 17 contested possessions amongst his 32. | 7 |
18 | WCE | Got 34 disposals but needs to use his speed more often. Had some key touches late when Pies surged. | 7 |
19 | Adel | Laid a game high 12 tackles and kicked the goal to put Collingwood 50 points clear early in the third term. | 7 |
20 | NM | Solid outing with 34 disposals, but need to see him use that explosive pace more often. | 7 |
21 | Port | Unlucky not to hit the scoreboard twice, won ten clearances and had six inside-50’s for a big game in the midfield. | 7 |
22 | Geel | Guthrie went to him at times and struggled. Only 12 effective disposals but did have seven clearances and five inside-50s. | 5 |
23 | Melb | Got forward of the scrums to be a threat at stages, and was a good pressure player with eight tackles. | 6 |
2016 Season
1 | Syd | Battled hard early but found more space as game progressed. Pies will be delighted with his debut. | 8 |
2 | Rich | Racked up stats and while not always finding targets his eight inside-50s were a more than handy contribution. | 7 |
3 | StK | Eight tackles and 17 contested possessions suggest string workrate but impact not as profound as numbers suggest. | 6 |
4 | Melb | Battled hard for six clearances and four inside-50s. Didn’t have the guys around him to get on top. | 7 |
5 | Ess | Ran hard and was super in the second half. Four inside-50s and seven clearances. | 8 |
6 | WCE | Battled hard winning clearances and laying tackles. | 7 |
7 | Carl | Tracked everywhere he went by Curnow. Won the ball OK but defensive game needs a lift. | 6 |
8 | Bris | Did as he pleased in the midfield with devastating effect and finished off with three goals. | 9 |
9 | Geel | Huge game. Touches came at crucial times and laid team-high eight tackles. | 9 |
10 | WB | Steady in first half without dominating. Kept battling on despite rotation limits.. | 7 |
11 | Port | Won his fair share of ball again but didn’t have the same impact going forward as he has been doing. | 7 |
12 | Melb | Quiet first half but lifted after half time to gather 20 disposals. Seven clearances. | 7 |
14 | Frem | Just kept on winning touches in the middle and was best afield. | 8 |
15 | Carl | Lifted after being quelled by Curnow. Worked hard with five tackles and four clearances. | 6 |
16 | GWS | Not dominant but performed strongly against old team in a winning midfield. | 7 |
17 | Adel | Rivalling Dangerfield as the recruit of the season. Impressive again. | 8 |
18 | NM | Often run down early and contained first half but finished strongly. | 6 |
19 | WCE | Excellent at the stoppages and won a lot of hard, contested ball. Good contributor. | 7 |
20 | Rich | Never stopped running but ball didn’t bounce his way at times. Nine tackles. | 7 |
21 | WB | Fairly quiet early but came into it from second term and generated a lot of drive. | 7 |
22 | GCS | Power runner in midfield but let himself down in front of goal (1.4). Huge night nonetheless. | 8 |
23 | Haw | Huge effort after zero-touch first term. Outstanding final term: 10 clearances, two goals. | 9 |
