2017 Digest: Still quite young and a great size (190cm, 89kg) for the midfield. Rarely mentioned in same breath as others but is very handy.
2017 NAB Cup:
2017 Season
1 | WB | Just a game from the second-string mid: often under pressure with the ball. | 4 |
2 | Rich | Struggling for clean possession and often looks as though he miskicks the ball. | 3 |
3 | Syd | Rotated through midfield and was given a few different roles, but played his part when required. | 6 |
4 | StK | Second-tier mid came off the bench to put in his usual honest display (19 possessions, a goal). | 5 |
5 | Ess | Relished the slippery scrap and won 27 possessions, breaking out of the stoppages on occasions. | 6 |
6 | Geel | Got under guard of Cats to grab 25 disposals. Importantly 21 of them hit the target given efficiency is his issue. | 7 |
7 | Carl | Nine effective disposals, three score involvements – not really enough from the second-rotation mid. | 4 |
8 | GWS | Effective target as a tall midfielder, and a reliable source of drive. | 6 |
9 | Haw | Barely sighted in first half after starting on the bench, but tackled well and turned in a fine last quarter. | 5 |
10 | Bris | Five inside-50s to go with 22 touches a handy afternoon. Able to link well at times off half back and through the wing. | 7 |
11 | Frem | Had high numbers and was more outside and running with the ball. | 6 |
12 | Melb | Spent time down back on Garlett/Petracca among others. Unable to impact flow of contest offensively. | 4 |
13 | Bye. | ||
14 | Port | Used across half back and won his share of ball (27 disposals). Impact not commensurate with stat totals. | 5 |
15 | Haw | Played up ground early before heading back into defence to play a deeper role. Certainly not a noteworthy performance. | 4 |
16 | Ess | Probably on of the better Pies. Defended well one-on-one and was able to win 22 possessions. Steady. | 7 |
17 | GCS | Used the ball well and worked hard defensively with seven tackles. | 6 |
18 | WCE | Might have found his best role off the halfback line. Strong effort. | 7 |
19 | Adel | Didn’t find a lot of the footy but was good with the footy in hand. | 4 |
20 | NM | Started proficiently in first term and was able to maintain that pace. Relishing new role off halfback. | 7 |
21 | Port | Kicking was a little off but was more than effective with seven tackles, five clearances and three inside-50’s. | 7 |
22 | Geel | Won a mountain of ball early then only managed nine possessions for remainder of the game for 19 in total. | 5 |
23 | Melb | Used in defence and was okay without doing anything earth-shattering. | 5 |
2016 Season
1 | Syd | Another with a high tackle count who worked his way into the game, but little impact. | 4 |
2 | Rich | Better performance than previous week. Contributed five tackles, one inside-50. | 5 |
3 | StK | Looked dangerous at times and at least tried to create some run and carry for team. Not the worst. | 6 |
4 | Melb | Quiet first half (six effective disposals) and ditto second – one inside-50s, two clearances. | 4 |
5 | Ess | Got back into some form with five clearances and plenty of ball. Confidence booster. | 6 |
6 | WCE | One of the better midfielders. Won the ball well and gave the team some run. | 6 |
7 | Carl | Used on a wing and across half forward. OK but not reaching the heights of last season. | 5 |
8 | Bris | Solid opening term (six disposals) but only 14 on a night the Magpies dominated. | 5 |
9 | Geel | Huge first half key to setting up win and ran with Dangerfield at times. Eight inside-50s. | 7 |
10 | WB | Worked hard for four quarters with tackling and effort at ground level. | 6 |
11 | Port | Numbers were OK but wasn’t a factor for much of the day in midfield. | 5 |
12 | Melb | Midfielder struggled to do any damage. Under pressure all day and as a result has seven kicks. | 3 |
14 | Frem | Energetic in the middle early, and although quieter in second half was effective. | 6 |
15 | Carl | Laid four tackles but overall a quiet night in the midfield. | 3 |
16 | GWS | OK game without starring. | 5 |
17 | Adel | Four inside-50s and two fine goals in the second term. | 7 |
18 | NM | Began on Dal Santo. Steady without starring. Tackled hard. | 5 |
19 | WCE | Battled hard to keep the ball moving the Magpies way and chimed in with important goal. | 6 |
20 | Rich | Arguably side’s best as played four solid quarters. Six clearances, five tackles. | 7 |
21 | WB | Steady contributor in midfield where he also applied pressure. | 6 |
22 | GCS | Big start with 11 possessions in first term and ended with two goals. Good contributor. | 7 |
23 | Haw | Burrowed in well and among better players. Seven clearances. | 7 |
2015 Season
1 | Bris | Broke even with Bewick on a wing. | 6 |
2 | Adel | Couldn’t convert opportunities in front of goals. Five inside 50s. | 5 |
3 | StK | Impressive game in all respects. Looks to be a fine pick-up. | 7 |
4 | Ess | Had the job to quell Watson and make himself a handy contributor too. | 7 |
5 | Carl | Proving a valuable acquisition in midfield, playing off opposition guns. | 6 |
6 | Geel | Negating mid whose lack of breakaway pace is only real knock. | 5 |
7 | Rich | Among Pies’ best again. Two goals, six inside-50s and two score assists. | 7 |
8 | GCS | Got plenty of the footy and made nine clearances. | 6 |
9 | NM | Relished the heavy going – especially late and kicked a good long goal. | 7 |
10 | Melb | Thrown run-with role on N Jones and found that tough. OK himself. | 5 |
11 | GWS | Continues strong first season at club in midfield. Two big goals. | 8 |
13 | Frem | Spent time matching motors with Fyfe and while found it tough kept battling. | 6 |
14 | Haw | Excellent first half and never let up. | 7 |
15 | Port | Smooth mover was a consistent contributor. | 7 |
16 | WCE | Started in middle and was good again. | 6 |
17 | WB | One of his quietest games in new colors. Couldn’t break free. | 4 |
18 | Melb | Up-and-down with no obvious tag. Third game in a row without a goal. | 5 |
19 | Carl | Steady in midfield then went to the lively Murphy late to try to rein him in. | 6 |
20 | Syd | Another good game and his last quarter goal gave hope. | 6 |
21 | Rich | Battled away for five inside-50s and two clearances but not a decisive factor. | 5 |
22 | Geel | Used the ball much better than previous week and had nine inside-50s. | 8 |
23 | Ess | One clearance, no inside-50s and one goal. Not a big afternoon. | 5 |
